Can you strike the Hummingbird pose?

  • June 28, 2018
Client Spotlight: Yogini Emmanuelle Royer, PUR YOGA founder

Last week, the world celebrated Yoga Day. Among the many benefits of yoga are improved flexibility, stress relief and a good old workout.

To celebrate this day, we chat with our client and founder of PUR YOGA (France), Yogini Emmanuelle Royer about attempting the hummingbird yoga pose and why she loves the reusable cotton tote bag for her yoga business.

Can you teach us the ‘Hummingbird’ Yoga Pose?

Yogini Emmanuelle: The hummingbird pose is also known as the Grasshopper pose or Parsva Bhuja Dandasana in Sanskrit. It is a very difficult yoga pose. What makes it so is that it combines a number of elements that are very challenging in their own right. You have to be a confident arm balancer; flexibility in both the hips and hamstrings are also necessary to get your legs into position.

Here is a step by step guide:

  1. Start in the Half Lord of the Fishes Pose variation.
  2. Sit on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you, buttocks supported on a folded blanket if you need more help shifting your pelvis forward and sitting up tall.
  3. Bend your left knee and slide your left foot close to your left buttock. Then bring the ankle of your right foot onto your left thigh.
  4. Exhale to twist to your left.
  5. Then place your hands on the floor, shoulder-width apart and beside your left hip.
  6. Start to shift your weight into your hands, lifting your legs up so that the sole of your left foot is flat on the floor and the sole of your right foot is on top of your right upper arm. Place the right foot as high up on the right arm as you can.
  7. Slowly start to lean forward, shifting more weight into your hands.
  8. Lift your hips and find a 45-degree angle with your arms.
  9. Press your right foot down into your right tricep as you lift the left leg and extend it to the right.
  10. Keep your left hip off your left elbow from the very beginning, supporting yourself with your core instead.
  11. Hold for 5 breaths, or as long as you can, before switching sides.

Note for Beginers: There’s not really a beginner’s version, but side crow is a good preparatory pose. It gives you the feeling of how much you have to twist your torso and how far forward you need to tip in order to get your feet off the ground.
